JVS Portraits - Canon 5D Mark II + Six 580EX II’s = Sweet 16 in Paris

JVS in Paris
I had the pleasure of photographing six beautiful 16-year-olds in Paris, France over the weekend and despite rain, sleet and freezing temperatures, these amazing young ladies toughed it out for a great shoot! BLU’s Ashlee (third from the left), celebrated her Sweet 16 with five of her closest friends in Paris last week, talk about a once in a lifetime experience!

I’ve been carrying a sketch book with me for the past several years which allows me to quickly jot down my thoughts and lighting ideas when they flash in my head. Within seconds of booking the shoot, several ideas popped into my head and one in particular (above image) turned out exactly as sketched.

Since the Eiffel Tower is only fully illuminated for 10 minutes at the beginning of each hour, I had to quickly choose the location, position the girls and set my speedlites. Creating this shot as quickly as I did, would not have been possible without Canon’s E-TTL II technology, Canon 580EX II’s (all six of them) and Canon’s Speedlite Transmitter (wireless) ST-E2. In addition, my Canon 5D Mark II’s focus was remarkable considering the location was almost pitch black and back lit.

A special thanks to Jerry Ward (Canon USA) & Chris Moseley for supplying backup speedlites and a huge thanks to Michelle Bracken for assisting with the shoot!

If you’re interested in learning how to make the most of your speedlites, please visit the JVS Workshops web site and join us in April! Thanks for reading! JVS

JVS Lighting Workshops - Pentax 67 II + 165 f/4 LS + 1×3 Strip Bank

I had the pleasure of photographing Jerome Bettis at his summer home in Colorado a few years back, ok, several years back and to this day, he was one of the nicest people that I’ve ever photographed.

I arrived at his home (he was away at the gym) and asked his house mates (all Steelers) if I could rearrange some furniture. They gave me the green light and I started to move his furniture with the help of Illustrator / Designer / overall Creative Genius Karen Dee Davis.

We flew in around 11am and had to fly out by 7pm so the fact that Jerome was running a tad late was starting to concern us. 4pm rolls around and so does Jerome. He greeted me with a huge hug, apologized for being late and offered me some of his buffalo wings.

For over 10 years, I’ve been sketching my portraits and testing my lighting prior to shooting any of my subjects / clients. This allows me to arrive on set, place my lights and shoot. I can clearly concentrate on the capture and not the technical.

The shoot lasted all of 20 frames since Jerome was sore from a morning workout. We thanked him for his time, packed the gear, moved his furniture back in place then jetted back to Dallas.

Thanks for reading, see ya tomorrow! JVS

Documentary Weddings - Chicago + Canon 1Ds Mark III + off-camera Canon 580 EX

Documentary Weddings by JVS
I was just about to wrap a LifeStyle engagement session in Chicago when I decided to turn the camera off, spin around 360 and see if there was a location that I’d possibly missed. Halfway through my spin, I noticed these wonderful, repetitive tile patterns and BAM a flash (not a lightbulb:) popped above my head.

After 15+ years of shooting, I’ve found the key to my creativity is the ability to push myself as hard as I can with each and every shoot.

Happy Monday! JVS

JVS Lighting Workshops - Canon 1Ds Mark III + 2 off-camera Canon 580 EX II’s + Colorshift Actions

Lighting Workshops by JVS
Several months ago, I was asked to beta test some new actions by my friend Jesh de Rox. The results were as unique as Jesh and the above image was treated with “Warm 70’s Love” from his Colorshift Experiential Actions. Explore the rest of Jesh’s offerings at his Enlighten web site.

‘08 2 Day Lighting Workshop shooter Julie Shields, was one of 20 shooters that witnessed the power of two carefully placed Canon 580EX II’s during our Fall Workshop.

Making great light isn’t as hard as you might think. For more info on how to breathe light into your portraits, please visit the JVS Workshops web site.
Important note: our April Workshops will be our last in Dallas. If you’ve been on the fence about attending one of our Workshops, now is the time!

See ya Monday with another “image of the day.” Thank you! JVS
